Registering for the French civic exam, price, centres and results

Where to register, what it costs, what to bring, when the result arrives and who is exempt. Each point links to the official page that says it, read on September 28, 2026.

Two approved bodies, and you register with them

The ministry website informs and helps you prepare, it registers nobody. You sign up with one of the two approved bodies, each with its own test centres and dates.

Both sites are in French. On the CCIP search, the exam is listed as Examen civique mention Carte de séjour pluriannuelle, mention Carte de résident or mention Naturalisation.

How much the civic exam costs

There is no national price. Each centre sets its own.

One centre that publishes its price, the Alliance française in Aix-Marseille, charges 80 euros.

Elsewhere the amount only shows up during registration, so compare two or three nearby centres before paying. Sitting the exam again means registering, and paying, again. At CCIP centres a booking cannot be undone.

On the day

Arrive at the time on your notice (convocation). The invigilator checks your ID and the notice, asks you to confirm your name, date of birth and email, takes your photo and has you sign on a tablet. Check the spelling, it goes on your certificate.

Phone off, no dictionary, no documents. Only your ID stays on the table.

The test itself is forty multiple choice questions in French, 28 on knowledge and 12 everyday scenarios, one right answer out of four, 45 minutes at most on a tablet or computer. You need 32 right. A wrong answer and a blank both score zero, so answer everything.

Results and certificate

At CCIP centres the result comes by email within 24 to 48 working hours, with a link to an online vault where you download the certificate. There is no paper version.

The certificate never expires. A pass at resident card level also counts for the multi-year residence permit.

A serious incident during the test can be appealed within 30 days of the certificate being issued (CCIP rule). A fail is fixed by sitting it again, whenever you like and as often as you need.

Who must take it, who is exempt

Every adult foreign national who signed the republican integration contract (CIR) and applies for a first multi-year residence permit or a first resident card. For naturalisation by decree, you pass the exam before you apply, not after.

Renewing a card you already hold does not require the certificate.
Beneficiaries of international protection and nationals covered by some bilateral agreements are not concerned, according to the ministry.
Foreign nationals over 65 do not have to pass it, according to CCIP, which gives this rule for residence permits.
People with a disability or a chronic illness can get adjustments, with a medical certificate.
