Not following the highway code means breaking the law. A minor speeding violation is a minor offense punished by a fine. Since December 29, 2025, speeding by 50 km/h or more over the limit is a misdemeanor (law no. 2025-622 of July 9, 2025). Driving without a license is also a misdemeanor.
The official text that proves it
« La contravention est l’infraction la moins grave. Exemple : un excès de vitesse ou du tapage nocturne. Elle est punie par une amende de maximum 3 000 € (pas de peine de prison possible). »
A minor offense is the least serious offense. Example, speeding or nighttime disturbance. It is punished by a fine of up to 3,000 euros (no prison sentence possible).
