What condition is mandatory to run in the presidential election?
Answer. To hold French nationality (as well as being 18 and having 500 endorsements from elected officials).
Avoir la nationalité française (et aussi 18 ans et 500 parrainages d'élus).
You must be French, be at least 18 years old, and not be deprived of your civic rights. You must also gather at least 500 signatures from elected officials (mayors, members of Parliament, etc.), called endorsements. These endorsements come from a 1962 law, and the threshold was raised to 500 in 1976. These laws are not covered in our sources.
The official text that proves it
« Tout Français et toute Française ayant la qualité d'électeur peut faire acte de candidature et être élu, sous réserve des cas d'incapacité ou d'inéligibilité prévus par la loi. »
Every French man and every French woman who is a registered voter may put themselves forward as a candidate and be elected, subject to the cases of incapacity or ineligibility provided for by law.
