The death penalty is abolished in 1981 under the presidency of Francois Mitterrand. His minister of justice, Robert Badinter, carried the law.

« En 1981, sous la Vème République, la peine de mort est totalement abolie . C’est Robert Badinter , qui était ministre de la Justice de François Mitterrand, le président de la République à ce moment-là, qui a soutenu cette abolition totale. »
In 1981, under the Fifth Republic, the death penalty is completely abolished. It is Robert Badinter, who was minister of justice under Francois Mitterrand, the President of the Republic at the time, who championed this total abolition.
