What does the State do to fight discrimination?
Answer. It bans discrimination by law and punishes those responsible.
Il interdit les discriminations par la loi et punit leurs auteurs.
The law sets out more than 26 forbidden grounds of discrimination. Even for a first offense, discrimination can be punished by up to 3 years in prison and a 45,000 euro fine, for example when a job or a service is refused because of someone's origin or sex. The Défenseur des droits (Rights Defender) also helps victims.

« La discrimination définie aux articles 225-1 à 225-1-2, commise à l'égard d'une personne physique ou morale, est punie de trois ans d'emprisonnement et de 45 000 euros d'amende lorsqu'elle consiste : 1° A refuser la fourniture d'un bien ou d'un service »
Discrimination as defined in articles 225-1 to 225-1-2, committed against a natural or legal person, is punished by three years' imprisonment and a 45,000 euro fine when it consists of, first, refusing to supply a good or a service.
