What is laïcité (secularism)?
Answer. A principle that separates the State and religions. The State is neutral, and everyone is free to believe or not to believe.
Un principe qui sépare l'État et les religions. L'État est neutre et chacun est libre de croire ou de ne pas croire.
The State neither recognizes nor funds any religion. In exchange, each person can practice their religion, or have none, while respecting the law.
The official text that proves it
« Le principe de laïcité implique la séparation entre l’État et les organisations religieuses ainsi que l'égalité de tous devant la loi sans distinction de religion ou de convictions. L'ordre est fondé sur la seule souveraineté du peuple. »
The principle of laïcité involves the separation between the State and religious organizations, as well as the equality of all before the law regardless of religion or beliefs. The order is founded solely on the sovereignty of the people.
