Answer. A civic duty. A citizen chosen by lot cannot refuse without a serious reason.
Un devoir civique. Un citoyen tiré au sort ne peut pas refuser sans motif grave.
Jurors are citizens chosen by lot to judge felonies together with the judges of the assize court. A juror who fails to appear without a valid reason can receive a fine. Since 2023, many felonies punishable by 15 or 20 years in prison have been tried without jurors, by departmental criminal courts made up of judges.
The official text that proves it
« Tout citoyen français âgé de plus de 23 ans, qui a tous ses droits civiques et qui est inscrit sur les listes électorales, peut être tiré au sort pour être juré lors d’un procès d’une cour d'assises. »
Every French citizen over the age of 23, who holds full civic rights and is registered on the electoral rolls, can be chosen by lot to serve as a juror in an assize court trial.
