What does the 1905 law say?
Answer. It separates Churches and the State. The State is independent of religions and funds none of them.
Elle sépare les Églises et l'État. L'État est indépendant des religions et n'en finance aucune.
This law of December 9, 1905, also guarantees freedom of conscience and the free practice of religion, within the limits of public order. There are a few exceptions to the no funding rule, such as in Alsace Moselle, for chaplaincies, or for the upkeep of religious buildings built before 1905.
