Which religious symbol can be worn in a public school while respecting laïcité (secularism)?
Answer. A discreet symbol, for example a small cross, a small medal or a small Star of David.
Un signe discret, par exemple une petite croix, une petite médaille ou une petite étoile de David.
In public schools, pupils are not allowed to wear a conspicuous religious symbol, meaning one that is clearly visible, such as a veil, a kippah or a large cross. Discreet symbols remain allowed.
The official text that proves it
« Dans les écoles, les collèges et les lycées publics, le port de signes ou tenues par lesquels les élèves manifestent ostensiblement une appartenance religieuse est interdit. »
In public primary schools, middle schools and high schools, the wearing of symbols or clothing by which pupils conspicuously display a religious affiliation is forbidden.
