Who can run in the presidential election?
Answer. A French citizen at least 18 years old, a registered voter, who has obtained at least 500 endorsements from elected officials.
Un citoyen français d'au moins 18 ans, électeur, qui a obtenu au moins 500 parrainages d'élus.
You must be French, be at least 18 years old, and not be deprived of your civic rights. You must also gather at least 500 signatures from elected officials (mayors, members of Parliament, etc.), called endorsements. These endorsements come from a 1962 law, and the threshold was raised to 500 in 1976. These laws are not covered in our sources.

« Tout Français et toute Française ayant la qualité d'électeur peut faire acte de candidature et être élu, sous réserve des cas d'incapacité ou d'inéligibilité prévus par la loi. »
Every French man and every French woman who is a registered voter may put themselves forward as a candidate and be elected, subject to the cases of incapacity or ineligibility provided for by law.
