What condition must be met to be a candidate in the municipal elections?
Answer. Be at least 18 years old and be a registered voter in the commune, or pay local taxes there.
Avoir au moins 18 ans et être électeur de la commune, ou y payer des impôts locaux.
You must have turned 18. You must also be a registered voter in the commune or be listed for local direct taxes. A European citizen living in France can also be a candidate, but cannot become mayor.
The official text that proves it
« Nul ne peut être élu conseiller municipal s'il n'est âgé de dix-huit ans révolus. Sont éligibles au conseil municipal tous les électeurs de la commune et les citoyens inscrits au rôle des contributions directes ou justifiant qu'ils devaient y être inscrits au 1er janvier de l'année de l'élection. »
No one may be elected as a town councilor unless they have turned eighteen. All voters of the commune are eligible for the town council, as are citizens listed for direct taxes or who can show they should have been listed on January 1 of the election year.
