What happens with children who do not speak French?

Answer. They must go to school like every other child and can take adapted classes to learn French.

Doivent aller à l’école comme les autres et peuvent suivre des cours adaptés pour apprendre le français.

School takes in every child, even those who do not speak French. They take a placement test and then follow adapted classes, called UPE2A, before joining the other students.

« Au moment de l’entrée dans l’école, l’enfant qui ne parle pas bien (ou pas du tout) le français passe un test de positionnement pour déterminer son niveau en français »

When a child who does not speak French well, or does not speak it at all, starts school, they take a placement test to determine their level in French
