Who punishes a person who commits a theft?
Answer. The judge (the criminal justice system).
Le juge (la justice pénale).
Theft is an offense. The police or the gendarmerie investigates, but it is a judge who decides the sentence. No one has the right to take justice into their own hands.

Breaking the law can lead to penalties. Penalties are handed down by the judge according to the severity of the offense.
