Can a person freely change religion in France?
Answer. Yes, everyone is free to change religion, or to no longer have one.
Oui, chacun est libre de changer de religion, ou de ne plus en avoir.
This is freedom of conscience, guaranteed by laïcité (secularism). No one can force someone to keep or to choose a religion.
The official text that proves it
« La laïcité garantit la liberté de conscience pour tous, c’est-à-dire que chaque personne est libre d’avoir ou de ne pas avoir de religion, d’en changer ou de ne plus en avoir. »
Laïcité guarantees freedom of conscience for all, meaning every person is free to have or not have a religion, to change it or to no longer have one.
